Learning differences impact a person's abilities in reading, writing, and/or math. Individuals with a learning difference do not lack motivation or possess lower cognitive abilities, but instead, their brains process, see, hear, and comprehend information using alternate pathways. Many individuals with a learning disorder will come up with test taking strategies, coping skills, mnemonics, and other methods to compensate for their learning difficulties.
People with learning differences may have challenges with self-esteem, mood, behavior, and attention. They may also find themselves having difficulty with relationships and completing daily activities. Therefore, learning disorders are often confused with AD/HD, anxiety, depression, and oppositional defiance disorder. This is why it is critical that you find a practitioner that specializes in performing comprehensive testing, and also has a strong understanding of other neurodevelopmental and mood disorders to prevent misdiagnosis.
